How to care for your mums

Mums, also known as chrysanthemums, are beautiful flowering plants that are popular in gardens and as cut flowers. Here are some tips on how to care for mums:

  1. Watering: Mums prefer moist, well-drained soil. Water them deeply once a week, or more often if the soil dries out quickly.

  2. Fertilizing: Fertilize mums with a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season.

  3. Pruning: Pinch back the tips of the plant in early summer to encourage bushier growth and more flowers.

  4. Sunlight: Mums prefer full sun, but they can also tolerate partial shade.

  5. Soil: Mums prefer soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5.

  6. Mulching: Mulch around the base of the plant with a layer of compost or shredded leaves to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  7. Pest and disease control: Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and caterpillars, and treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary. Mums can also be susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew and botrytis, so be sure to remove any diseased leaves and provide good air circulation around the plant.
